Telomere Length Test (Measuring the Length of Telomeres)

This is an analysis of the length of the “telomeres,” which are the ends of the chromosomes in the cells of the human body, using blood or cells from the body for laboratory testing to assess cellular deterioration or biological age (Biological Age)

What are the benefits of telomere length testing?

Telomere Length Testing is one of the medical tools that helps us understand the health of the body at the cellular level, especially in terms of biological age or the level of cellular deterioration, which may differ from our actual age.

What are the benefits of telomere length testing?

  • Assess health deeply at the cellular level
Know whether the body is deteriorating faster or slower than it should.
  • Plan preventive health care more accurately
If telomeres are found to be shorter than average, the physician can recommend health care approaches that are more appropriate and precisely targeted.
  • Adjust behaviors to reduce long-term deterioration
Such as choosing the right foods, exercising, or getting enough rest, which may help slow deterioration.
  • Monitor health continuously
Testing can be repeated after a certain period to observe changes in telomeres following adjustments to health behaviors.

What are “telomeres”? How do they affect the body?

Chromosomes are the genetic code (DNA) located in the cells of the body, responsible for controlling the functioning of cells so that they work correctly. If cells function abnormally, it may be caused by damage to this genetic material. At the ends of the chromosomes there are tiny structures called “telomeres” (Telomere), which act like a “protective cap,” helping to protect the chromosomes from damage while cells divide, gradually becoming shorter each time a cell divides.

How are telomeres related to physical health?

Although the shortening of telomeres is a normal part of age-related deterioration, a number of research studies indicate that telomeres shortening faster than normal may be associated with the risk of cellular decline, which affects overall quality of life, such as aging, fatigue, or the body's recovery. Having telomeres of an appropriate length may therefore reflect a good internal balance within the body and is associated with a tendency toward good long-term health.

Factors that cause telomeres to shorten

1. Chronic stress
Stress accumulated from negative emotions, such as anger, anxiety, or emotional pressure, stimulates the body to release hormones that accelerate cellular deterioration.
2. Insufficient rest
Sleeping less than 7-8 hours per day results in the body not having time to repair cells, and telomeres shorten faster than normal.
3. Fasting or improper dieting
Severe fasting or eating at the wrong times may put the body in a state of stress and accelerate the deterioration of telomeres.
4. Inappropriate eating habits
Consuming too much processed food, such as food high in trans fats, sugar, or sodium, as well as a lack of fiber from fruits and vegetables, all affect cellular health.
5. Lack of exercise
Or over-exertion; both not moving at all and exercising excessively can create stress on the body, causing telomeres to deteriorate faster.
6. Regular exposure to pollution
Regular exposure to cigarette smoke, PM 2.5 dust, chemicals, or other pollution increases free radicals in the body, which contribute to damaging cells and telomeres.

How can we care for the health of our telomeres?

Although telomere length is influenced by genetics, many behavioral factors can help maintain and promote cells in a healthy condition, such as:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants
  • Exercising regularly at an appropriate level
  • Getting enough rest
  • Avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol
  • Managing stress effectively
  • Drinking 2 liters of water per day

Shortened telomeres: which diseases are they associated with?

  • Heart disease: Abnormal functioning of various parts of the heart, such as the heart muscle, heart valves, coronary arteries, or arrhythmia, etc.
  • Diabetes: Chronically having blood sugar levels higher than normal, due to abnormally low secretion of the hormone insulin, or the body having insulin resistance.
  • Parkinson's disease: A movement disorder caused by the deterioration of nerve cells in the brainstem, resulting in less dopamine being produced.
  • Alzheimer's disease: Memory loss commonly found in the elderly, caused by brain atrophy or deterioration, resulting in reduced functioning of some parts of the brain.

Note: The shortening of telomeres is not a “direct cause” of these diseases, but they are statistically correlated and are used as an “indicator” of the cells' potential to repair and regenerate themselves.

Shortened telomeres are linked to health... so how can we know how short ours are?

Although the length of telomeres cannot be seen with the naked eye, it is now possible to measure telomere length using specialized technology, which helps us know the level of cellular integrity in the body and use that information as a guide for preventive health care.

Why should you test telomere length?

  • To use as baseline information for planning long-term health care
  • To monitor the results of behavioral adjustments, such as exercise or nutritional changes
  • To supplement other health assessments, such as muscle mass and the risk of chronic diseases

Getting to know your telomeres is the starting point of caring for your health from within. Although telomeres are only a tiny part of the cell, they play an important role in slowing aging and preventing various diseases. Testing telomere length is therefore like getting to know your true “biological age,” so you can plan your health care in a precisely targeted way.
